Sarah Report 12 Oct 2010 20:07

Hi I am trying to find information on my great grandfather and his father, James monk born 1888 married bessie agnes reece in monmouthshire 1915, His occupation was a haycutter, They had three children, Maurice, Sheilagh and Monica. The story is that James Monk and Jesse Monk came from Swindon as brothers, however looking at some information on both there marriages, they record different fathers.Jessie Monk born 1883 married Frances Phililps in 1911 his father was William Monk Labourer and James Monk was Fred Monk occupation haulier, who was recorded as deceased when James got married in 1915.
James Monk died in 1970, I have no other information as to where he was born or came from and how they were related.
Any information would be a great help.

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Oct 2010 20:42

There were older children in the family -- 1871:

Civil parish: Black Bourton
Town: Black Bourton
County/Island: Oxfordshire

William Monk 30
Elizabeth Monk 28
Henry Monk 6
Sarah Monk 4
John Monk 3
Thomas Monk 11 Months
Emanuel Silman 14

I wonder whether James was in fact a grandchild (not uncommon to see a grandchild shown as a child), and possibly the son of Sarah?

I'm finding posts in this thread rather cryptic!

Maryb, that's from the 1911 census? Can we count the kids? ;)

MaureeninNY Report 12 Oct 2010 20:44

Well,if it's the same James,I'd say this was his birth:
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/BirthSearch.aspx

Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
MONK James MONK (mmn)? 1888 Cirencester Northleach, Bibury 13 106

So quite possibly he was born to one of the Monk daughters and just put down Uncle Fred's name as his father or something.

Edit-I type too slowly!!!!

In 1891, James is listed *after* Henry Clack (son, 26) -- which suggests he wasn't a son of William and Mary, or he would appear in the proper order, after "Jessies", son, 9.

LOL omg got to get my head round that lot thanks for the info,

OK so, Elizabeth nee clack/clark and William monk had the following children
Henry, Sarah, John, Thomas, Mary, Frederick and Jesse Monk
Looks like sarah had a child out of marriage ?? named James Monk.
Sarah then Married Frederick Cox and had 11 children 9 will still surviving in 1911.

This all sounds right and would make sense as to why Jesse and James came over as brothers. Thanks all so much

Mary

Mary Report 13 Oct 2010 08:44

Eilliam Monk and elizabeth Clack had nine kids all accounted for.

Sarah and Fred Cox had 9 2died leaving 7.

It doesn't mean for deffinate that James was the son of Sarah.

On the marriage certificate for James it says dad Fred a haulier, but on all census returns Fred Cox was in the boiler making trade.

Maybe you would have to get birth cerificate of James Monk 1888 to determine the truth.
