Hi, I'm trying to find the parents of Peter Gowen born in the 1850s in Chipping Sodbury ,so the 1871,1881, 1891 census tell me I can find him in the marriage index and death index. So I know who he married and everything about him after 1871 , but nothing before . Any help would be really great ! . I dont know where to look next . Pip

This looks really good and I am going to follow these lines through to see if I can link it all together. I think I'm going to have to get birth and marriage certs to make sure !. Thank you all for all your time ,effort and help , I'm very greatful . One more question can I get a birth certificate if I cannot find or do not know exactly when or where he was born or who his parents were ?
Sorry to be so dumb Pip

If you are unable to see a birth registration on freebmd, it means the birth was not registered. As it wasn't punishable by a fine until 1875 to fail to register a birth, you must consider that's what could have happened.

However, if his father's details are on his marriage certificate, you may manage without the birth
