someone kindly sent me a copy of my family im tracing on the 1911 census its joseph airey age 51 wife marion 50 richard w 18 marge sarah 16 and the problem is this looks like elisa age 13 male but i cant find any records of his birth he was born in moshouse cumberland and he is not on 1901 census plzzz help

If it's definitely a male, it's probably Elisha or Elijah

Try putting in Eli* when searching for the birth registration...........

its def not alexander he is another child it sed on the 1911 census they had 12 kids altogether 2 died dont no which 2 10 living i found 11 but this elisa has threw me

Is Alexander on the 1911 census he would have been 13 and I cannot see them having 2 children the same age if they were not twins

no alexander is not on the 1911 census i assumed he was 1 ov the ones who died do you think yhey could have put elisa down instead of alexander??? so confusing

It's probably just badly-written - and the age matches the 1901 AND the birth reg'n

You need someone to take a look at the 1911 census image to see if they can work out the name

It could be a transcription, but she says '...it looks like ..'

I think Sheena may not be experienced in reading older handwritten script. A cursive 'x' can look very similar to an 's' and 'c' or 'a' close together.

I don't know of any way online for Cumberland. There are a few BMDs on the Cumberland Archives site but no Airey baptisms.

As Moorhouse is in the Carlisle registration district, I think you'll find the birth in Barbara's post will be him.

if one of the babies was stillborn, then it would not have been registered at that time


so you may never be able to find the births

on the 1911 cencus it has a colum children born born alive 12 children alive 10 children dead 2 but i only have found 10 through the census need 2 find missing 2 ?????any ideas

look at what I said in the posting just above yours


If a baby was still born, it would not have been registered at that time.

In fact registration of still born babies did not happen until about the 1920s ........ and those registrations are kept in a closed registry. Only the parents, or a sibling with proof that the parents are dead, can have access.


So there will be no birth registration or death to find for it.

Yet, the mother would have still considered that she ahd given birth to a child, and would ahe counted it as part of her family.


Most such babies were in fact buried in graves with other people, or included in someone's coffin.


the church or cemetery MAY have a record of such babies and where they were buried ..... but you'd have to know which cemetery to approach.
